Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled polymer having excellent composite substance phase- separating ability, by a method wherein a monomer mixt. of an arom. vinyl compd. and an alkyl (meth)acrylate is polymerized in the presence of a high-temperature active type free-radical generating polymn. initiator by a two-stage polymn. method.
CONSTITUTION: A monomer mixt. consisting of 60W95wt% at least one arom. vinyl compd. (e.g. styrene) and 5W40wt% at least one monomer selected from a 2W12C alkyl acrylate (e.g. n-butyl acrylate) and a 6W18C alkyl methacrylate (e.g. n-hexyl methacrylate), is polymerized to 80W90% conversion of monomers to polymer in the presence of a high-temperature active type free-radical generating polymn. initiator having a 10hr half-life temp. of not lower than 100°C (e.g. t- butyl peroxybenzoate) at 50W100°C, while controlling max. polymn. rate to 10%/hr or less. Then the temp. of the polymn. mixt. is risen to 100°C or higher to complete the polymn. reaction. By this two-stage polymn, the titled copolymer is produced which can be streched at 60W100°C and is suitable for extrusion molding.
