Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an anhydrous quartz type fiber base material by placing a porous preform of silica glass in gas plasma contg. a gas generating an active species which reacts with OH group to safely dehydrate the preform at a low temp. CONSTITUTION:Porous preform 10 of silica glass is placed in hermetically sealed quartz chamber 12, and chamber 12 is evacuated to about 1-7Torr with vacuum device 14. CF4 and O2 are continuously fed into chamber 12 from inlet 16, and by applying an electric power of 10-20MHz to high frequency coil 18, plasma of fluorine, carbon and oxygen is generated in chamber 12. Fluorine plasma eliminates OH group in the silica glass, and carbon separated from the CF4 reacts with oxygen plasma, forming CO2 harmless to preform 10. Thus, an anhydrous quartz type fiber base material is obtd.
