Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce noises produced by the exhaust gas of engine, by providing a reed valve at the portion of exhaust pipe where it is opened in an expansion chamber, and thereby varying the opening area of the opening of exhaust pipe in response to the output of engine.
CONSTITUTION: The first expansion chamber 23, the second expansion chamber 24 and the third expansion chamber 25 are formed in silincer 20. Exhaust pipe 26 is provided with an opening 27 to which a reed valve 28 is attached. When exhaust gas is passed from the first and the second expansion chambers 23, 24 to the third expansion chamber 25 or from the third expansion chamber 25 to the atmosphere, the exhaust-gas flow is restricted by pipes 32, 33 and tail pipe 34, so that fluctuation of pressure is attenuated. When the engine is operated at a low speed and with a low output, reed valve 28 is not opened almost at all, so that the ratio of the sectional area S2 to that S1 becomes large and therefore noise attenuating effected is enhanced. Thus, it is enabled to reduce noises remarkably even at the time of low- speed and low-output operation of engine.
