Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a copolyester-amide consisting of alternately bonded low molecular weight blocks, by ester-amide exchange reaction of a mixture of a high molecular weight aliphatic polyester and polyamide at a specific condition.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of a high molecular weight aliphatic polyester, e.g. polyethylene adipate, etc., with a high molecular weight aliphatic polyamide, e.g. nylon 6, etc., is melted and the ester-amide exchange reactions is carried out to prepare the product having a clearly lowered melting point. The reaction gives a biodegradable copolyesteramide having an alternately bonded structure ...A-B-A-B... wherein A is an ester block of a low molecular weight aliphatic polyester preferably of the formula I(X is aliphatic ester reside; n is 1W50) and B is an amide block of a low molecular weight aliphatic polyamide preferably of the formula II (Y is aliphatic amide residue; m is 1W25).
