Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable adequate shading correction by reading a white roller opposed to a reading means plural times when changing its position, and making the maximum output among the outputs of the reading a white reference signal. CONSTITUTION:In an optical part 1, the white roller is read by irradiating it by a light source, and its reference white signal is stored in a storage circuit (RAM) 4 through an image pickup element 2 and an A/D converting part 3. Next, the reference white signal obtained by reading the white roller after rotating it is stored in the storage circuit (RAM) 5. The contents of the circuits 4, 5 are compared with each other by a comparison circuit 6, and when the contents of the circuit 5 is larger, it is stored in the circuit 4. The best shading waveform is kept always in the circuit 4 by repeating this operation plural times. The contents of it are stored in the storage circuit (RAM) 7, and multiplied by a threshold determined by the storage circuit (ROM) 8 by a multiplication circuit 9, and binarized by a binarization circuit 10.

[Function] According to the present invention, before reading a document, a white reference signal is obtained by reading a plurality of lines by changing the position of the white roller while rotating the white roller, and the maximum value of the white reference signal is determined. By storing the output in a memory circuit, reading out the contents of the memory circuit when reading the original, and performing shading correction, it is possible to avoid being affected by scratches, dirt, etc. on the white roller.

At this time, the potentials of memory circuits 4 and 5 are compared, and if the potential of memory circuit 5 is greater than the potential of memory circuit 4,
The contents stored in the memory circuit 5 are stored in the memory circuit 4 (steps S4 and S5). If this does not happen, the rotated white roller is read again and stored in the storage circuit 5 in that state (steps 54, 52, and S3). Then, it is compared again with the potential of the memory circuit 4 (step S4).

By repeating the above operation multiple times,
.. This is achieved by keeping the best shading waveform in the Q circuit 4 at all times. The contents of the memory circuit 4 are then stored in the memory circuit 6, and a threshold value is determined in the memory circuit (ROM) 8 based on the waveform. The determined threshold value is multiplied by a multiplication circuit 9 and binarized by a binarization circuit 10.

As described above, by reading the reference white signal while changing the location of the white roller and using its maximum value as the shading waveform, it is possible to perform good shading correction without affecting scratches or stains on the white roller.
