Abstract

988, 757. Temperature sensitive substances. XEROX CORPORATION. Sept. 27, 1963 [Oct. 24, 1962],No. 38277/63. Heading G1D. [Also in Division G5] Portions of a thermotropically colour sensitive layer 21 are heated to produce a colour change and subsequently cooled to reverse the change. Conductors 12.. 19 form a lattice of Peltier junctions, whereby local heating and cooling will produce and erase a visible image. Layer 21 may be a 33.9% copper mercuric iodide, 66.1% silver mercuric iodide mixture in a methyl methacrylate binder. This mixture changes from yellow-orange to crimson at 70‹C. and must then be cooled to 10‹C. to reverse the change. Other materials suitable for layer 21 are copper mercuric iodide alone (70‹C. and 58‹C. are colour change temperatures), silver mercuric iodide (47‹C., 45‹C.), also bianthrone and its vinylene homolog, and members of the dianthrone and spiran series. Layer 21 may change in transparency rather than colour.
