Abstract

The invention comprises polymeric anhydrides containing anhydride residues of benzophenone-4:41-dicarboxylic acid of formula: <FORM:0968715/C3/1> The polymer may also contain anhydride residues of another acid e.g. diphenyl methane-4:41-dicarboxylic acid, terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid or naphthalene dicarboxylic acid. The polymers may be obtained (a) by heating the dicarboxylic acid with a monocarboxylic acid anhydride or acid chloride or ketene, and heating the product under reduced pressure, (b) by reacting the diacid chloride of the acid with a salt of the acid, (c) by reacting the diacid chloride of the acid with water preferably in the presence of an acid acceptor, (d) by heating paraformaldehyde with either the diacid chloride of the dibasic acid or with the product obtained by reaction of the dibasic acid with a monocarboxylic acid anhydride, acid chloride or a ketene and then heating under reduced pressure, (e) by heating the diacid chloride of the acid with the anhydride of a monobasic acid, (f) by heating the diacid chloride of the acid with a diester of the acid and a catalyst e.g. zinc chloride, or (g) by heating the diacid chloride of the acid with the acid itself. In examples polymers are obtained by further heating in nitrogen the product obtained by heating benzophenone-4:41-dicarboxylic acid and acetic acid; by heating benzophenone-4:41-dicarboxylic acid and diphenyl methane-4:41-dicarboxylic acid with acetic anhydride; by heating benzophenone-4:41-dicarboxylic acid and isophthalic acid with acetic anhydride; by heating benzophenone-4:41-dicarboxylic acid and terephthalic acid with acetic anhydride; and by reacting benzophenone -4:41-dicarboxylic acid dissolved in dimethyl formamide containing pyridine with benzophenone-4:41-dicarbonyl chloride in dimethyl formamide.
