Abstract

948,351. Screwing-up stoppers; chucks. METAL CLOSURES Ltd. Feb. 16, 1961 [March 8, 1960], No. 8224/60. Headings B3B and B3N. [Also in Division B8] A chuck for tightening threaded closures has a rotary member 4 driving a spindle 9 through a torque limiter 11, 10, 8 and a rotatable, axiallyslidable contactible gripper 27 which derives radial compression from upward movement of ejector 29, caused by contact with a closure cap, causing balls 28 to act on taper 27. When the cap placed on a container neck contacts the ejector 29, the ejector moves freely upward until its shoulder 33 contacts a shoulder 34, to lift the collet 27 which thereby grips the cap and screws it on to the container. On lowering the container, springs 22, 30 return the ejector 29 and collet 27. Pin 21 provides rotational drive for the ejector and collet. The torque limiter is adjusted by means of a screwed spring support 15 acting on springs 14.
