Abstract

A refractory ceramic composition comprises a polymer of formula (AlClx (OH)3-x)n where X is 0,2 to 1,0 or (TiClp(OH)4-p)n, where p is 0,05 to 1,5, "n" in each case being an integer of at least 2, and a refractory oxide or material containing such an oxide, e.g. alumina, titania, silica, calcined china clay and alusite or kyanite, spinel, dead-burned dolomite, exfoliated vermiculite, zircon, kaolin, talc, mica, bauxite, mullite. The composition comprises by weight 1 to 75%, preferably 5 to 20% of the polymer which is dissolved in water or alcohol and the refractory oxide or material is dispersed or dissolved therein followed by evaporation of the solvent or precipitation e.g. by adding aniline, to obtain a viscous or semi-solid composition which can be moulded, slip cast, extruded, or dried, powdered and pressed, to shape or coated on to shaped articles, e.g. moulds. The material is dried, e.g. at up to 200 DEG C., then fired at 200 DEG C. up to 2000 DEG C., preferably within 1000 DEG C. to 1800 DEG C. The specific method for the preparation of the polymers is described in the Specification and other methods disclosed in Specification 924,509.
