A variable speed gear comprises a pair of wheels 10, 15 contacted by a large ball 13 engaged by a group of small balls 18 in a circular race 21, the large ball rotating about an axis passing through the centre of the ball and of the race, means being provided to change the position of the race to vary the radii of the large ball relative to the wheels. The ball race is arranged within a concave portion of a sector gear 20 meshing with a rack 19 rigid with a ring 24 movable axially to effect tilting of the ball axis. A plurality of large balls may be employed and they may engage with cones, discs or other balls. Two variable speed gears according to the invention may be combined in series. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, a disc 40 is fixed to the casing, the ring 42 carrying the balls and the disc 41 being connected to the input and output shafts.
