A curved surgical needle of substantially equilateral triangle cross-section having one face parallel to the needle axis of curvature and one edge facing externally of the needle arc comprises a point, and a rearwardly tapering cutting portion having cutting edges on the edges of the face parallel to the needle axis of curvature and a cutting edge on the edge facing externally of the needle arc extending a part of the distance from the point along the cutting portion. As shown, the needle has a tapered front portion 19 and a rear portion 16 of uniform cross-section having dulled edges. The inner edges of the front portion are sharp. The outer edge of the front portion is sharp adjacent the point 17, but is flattened as at 14 towards the rear. The rear end 20 of the needle is cylindrical and may be joined to the suture 22 in any conventional manner.
