A sterilised package is constructed so that the opening through which the contents are withdrawn is covered by a portion removable prior to such withdrawal. The contents are thus not contaminated during passage out of the opening. In one embodiment an outer envelope 11 for sutures is closed by adjesive tape, removal of which leaves a sterile area adjacent the mouth. The sutures are contained in individual packages 24 in a common sheath 18 for ease of handling. Other embodiments are described in which a simple flat envolope, which may have a closure flap, is sealed by tape, Figs. 4-8 (not shown). In a further suture package, the sutures and sheath 57 are enclosed in two telescoped open-ended envelopes 51, 56 which may be sealed by tape 54, as shown, or may be joined directly with a weakened seam &c. being provided adjacent the join in the envelope 56.
