Abstract

826,625. Making heat exchangers; welding by pressure. PORTER & CO. (SALFORD) Ltd., T. Feb. 27, 1958 [Dec. 4, 1956], No. 37023/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XIII] In a heat exchange plate or evaporator plate of the kind in which a tube for a heat exchange medium is located between a pair of plates one or both of which is or are grooved to receive the tube, the plates are of aluminium or aluminium alloy secured together by cold-welding at the edges and at various spaced points over the surface. A tube 3 is enclosed between plates 1, 2, the grooves 2a in the plate 2 being such that pressure is required to bring the plates into contact, which pressure deforms the tube to D-shape. The plate 1 is wider than the plate 2 and the extra width 4 is folded back to form a seam which is subsequently welded, a groove 5 being rolled in the outer surface of the plate 1. Cold spot-welds 6 are provided to join the plates 1, 2 at spaced points intermediate the tubes and edges of the plates. Specification 769,929 is referred to.
