Class 117 A magnetic separator for separating magnetic particles from liquids or gases comprises a ferro-magnetic cylindrical member 2 in which permanent magnets 7 are disposed with like poles adjacent the centre of the member and the outer ends of the magnets have pole-pieces 12 secured by non-magnetic flange members 9. The pole-pieces serve as supports for the member 2 and form a magnetic connection with the magnetic cating 1. The member 2 is rotatable by means of an extension 13, and material to be treated is fed into an inlet 15; alternatively, an inlet may be provided at the bottom of the casing. In both cases the outlet for the non-magnetic material is at the bottom near an end face of the casing. A scraper removes the magnetic material from the member 2. In the Fig. 3 construction, two rotatable members 2 are provided, the material removed from the member nearest the inlet 17 being passed on to the other member for further separation. The casing may have a non-magnetic liner 20 provided with projections 21.
