A valve which enables anµsthetic apparatus to be used for artificial respiration comprises sockets for attaching it to the apparatus and to a mask and an oblique exhalation pipe one end of which serves as an exhalation valve seat and the other end of which forms a seat for an inhalation valve member when the inhalation valve is open. The anµsthetic apparatus is connected to a first portion 3 of the valve construction and a mask is connected to a socket 13 formed by a second portion 1. Inside the construction, the rim of the socket 13 lies close to an oblique exhalation pipe 12 also carried by the second portion 1. An inhalation valve 11 in the form of a rubber sheet is so disposed that when open it seats on the inner end of the exhalation pipe 12. On exhalation the valve 11 closes and an exhalation valve 6, which normally seats on the outer end of the exhalation pipe 12 opens. The seat 10 of the inhalation valve is reinforced by a cross-shaped member to prevent the inhalation valve being drawn through the valve seat 10. During artificial respiration, inhalation is effected by compressing the breathing bag of the anµsthetic apparatus.
