[Also in Groups XXVI and XXIX] In a piston-operated gas generator in which air from a compressor cylinder is supplied to an engine cylinder and power gas is delivered from the engine cylinder and comprising an auxiliary gas turbine adapted to drive one or more auxiliary devices of the gas generator, the auxiliary turbine is arranged to be driven by air derived from a scavenge air receiver located between the compressor and engine cylinders. The invention is applicable to locomotives, marine installations or electricity producing plants. As shown a turbine 13 is employed for driving one or more auxiliaries of a gas generator 1 through a reduction gear 33a, 33b. The turbine may drive a cooling water pump and/or a fan for cooling the cooling water or other auxiliaries. The turbine is driven by compressed air from the reservoir 10. The number of valves 17a, 17b open is regulated by means of a centrifugal governor 20 which operates a rack 23 by means of a pneumatic or hydraulic servomotor piston 29. The air may be heated or cooled before reaching the entry to the turbine. Heating may be effected by an exchanger 34 or by burning some fuel in the piping 19. When the air is cooled the turbine exhaust air can be used for cooling the drivers compartment of a locomotive. The gas generator could have two opposed pistons with synchronising means. The tension of the spring 36 of the governor can be made to vary in dependence on the pressure in the casing 10 or in the chamber 18. A stop may be provided inside the cylinder 41 to arrest movement of the piston 40 when the pressure in chamber 18 reaches a value corresponding to the maximum pressure of the range of pressures.
