A perforated smoke-cooling partition 28, Fig. 2, of good heat-conducting material, e.g. aluminium foil, is provided across the whole cross-section of a cigar or cigarette filling, preferably in front of a hollow mouthpiece, a filter tip, which may be a filter plug or a tobacco filling the same as or differing from the main filling, or a cotton wad 18 retained by bent-in portions 16a of one or two retaining sleeves 14a, 32. The partition may intersect the cigar or cigarette wrapper, when an external retaining sleeve is provided and the partition itself may have a flange, e.g. 68b, Fig. 9, projecting forwardly, backwardly or both ways beneath the retaining sleeve, with packing sleeves 80, 82 if required. The partition may! have a flange extending backwardly between the wrapper and a retaining sleeve internal thereto. The filter plug may be of coiled crepe paper with or without wadding or ordinary paper insertions, of rolled-up paper having alternate plain and wavy portions, or may be a plaited or woven insert of paper, or textile materials or mixtures thereof, pulp, silica gel, alumina gel, activated charcoal, asbestos or porous ceramic material. Filter material used may be impregnated with citric, tartaric, tannic or lactic acids, iron chloride, potassium or sodium bicarbonate, sodium bisulphate, monosodium phosphate or boric acid. More than one partition may be used. Cigarettes similar to those of Fig. 2 may be made by a continuous rod process, double-length sleeves with wads and partitions at both ends being enclosed in a wrapper alternately with doublelength tobacco sections.
