Abstract

741,506. Gas turbine plant. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. June. 18, 1954 [June 23, 1953], No. 17373/53. Class 110(3) In an open-circuit gas turbine plant, gaseous fuel is introduced at 1 into the air supply pipe 2 of the plant compressor 3, the resulting compressed gas-air mixture being kept well below minimum explosive mixture strength and passed through the cold pass of heat exchange 4 and a reaction chamber 5 lined with catalytic material inducing an exothermic quasi-combustive reaction in the compressed mixture, and thence through the gas turbine 6, the exhaust of which is passed through the hot pass of the heat exchanger 4. The gas may be natural gas, blast furnace gas, methane from sewage plants or by-product gas from an industrial process. The chamber 5 contains a matrix heat-resistant material having a large area exposed to the gaseous mixture and coated with a catalyst such as platinized asbestos. The plant may comprise several compressors and turbines.
