Abstract

A non-toxic ion-exchange resin indicator compound, for determining whether the pH of gastric juice in a stomach is above or below a predetermined value, comprises an ion-exchange complex synthetic polymer resin having associated therewith 0.04-0.5 millimoles of displaceable and readily identifiable ions per dose, the amount of indicator ion per gram of ion-exchange resin being less than the total capacity of the resin. The dose is administered orally and if the hydrochloric acid concentration is above a certain value, the ions are displaced and appear in body fluids, for example, urine, blood, saliva or sweat. The concentration of ion in the resin varies depending on the size of the dose, which may be from 1-50 grams. Suitable cation or anion exchange resins are those available under the Registered Trade Marks "Amberlite" and "Permutit." The displaceable ions may be cations or anions; in examples, indicator compounds are prepared by treating resins with (1) quinine hydrochloride; (2) tetramethylaminophenothiazinium chloride (methylene blue); (3) 2, 4-diamino-41-ethoxyazobenzene monohydrochloride (serenium); (4) sodium fluorescein (uranin); (5) potassium iodide or potassium thiocyanate. Tests are described in which the indicator compounds are mixed with solutions of hydrochloric acid and gastric juice of varying pH values.
