In a grinding mill having rotatable hammers or beaters c, the lower half b of the mill casing is provided with an outlet port b<SP>4</SP>, so disposed as to allow withdrawal of ground material in a direction approximately tangential to the grinding chamber as bounded by a perforate screen or screens j, and an air inlet port b<SP>5</SP> disposed opposite to the port b<SP>4</SP>, both ports extending the full width of the mill casing. The port b<SP>4</SP> is associated with an exhaust fan and the port b<SP>5</SP> is provided with an adjustable pivoted shutter p for regulating the flow of air therethrough. The upper half a of the mill casing is pivoted to the lower half b at a<SP>1</SP> and is provided with abrading surfaces a<SP>2</SP>. When the mill is required to be used in a closed circuit milling system, the port b<SP>5</SP> may be connected to the return air trunking of the system.
