[Also in Group XII] A coke-quenching car for a horizontal coke oven battery comprises a chassis 1 for movement along the battery, a coke-container 6 adapted to be charged and discharged at the battery side and mounted to be tiltable about a substantially central axis, the container having a side wall in the form of a gate 11 which is automatically opened to discharge the coke when the container is tilted to lower the battery side thereof. The container when being charged, is tilted away from the loading so that the coke is substantially uniformily spread over the floor 10. The container has openings 16 to drain off quenching water. The gate 11 is pivotally mounted by means of arms 12 and pivots 13 carried by bearing brackets 15 connected to the end walls and pivoted at 7 to the chassis. Arms 19 carrying rollers 20 are disposed on the chassis in the path of the arms 12, so that when the container 6 is tilted to the discharge position the rollers 20 eventually engage the arms 12 and hold up the wall 11 to form a discharge opening.
