687,967. Making wire filter elements. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. Sept. 4, 1950, No. 21731/50. Class 83 (ii). [Also in Group I] A method of making a filter element from metal ribbon having projections from one of its faces comprises coating the ribbon with a metal having a fixing point lower than that of the ribbon, forming a helical coil of the coated ribbon with the projections of each convolution in contact with an adjacent convolution to provide filter spaces between the convolutions, and then heating the coil to the fusing temperature of the coating metal to bond the projections to the adjacent convolutions. In the filter element shown in part, the ribbon 10 is tapered in cross-section. The element may be made by copper-plating the ribbon and winding it upon a mandrel with the ribs 11 in intimate contact with the adjacent convolutions. The element is then immersed in a suitable flux, for example 80 per cent borax and 20 per cent methyl alcohol, and the ribs are then brazed to the adjacent convolutions by heat treatment to the fusing temperature of copper in a furnace having an oxygen-free atmosphere.
