In a continuous rod cigarette-making machine a retarding element 24 is operated at timed intervals by a cam 30 to contact the tobacco filler as it moves beneath a tapered tongue 21 leading to the wrapping device 22, whereby the distribution of the tobacco in the filler is adjusted. The element 24 is reciprocated by the cam 30 so that it projects at timed intervals through a hole 25 in the tongue 21 and contacts the filler. To produce dense-end cigarettes, the element 24 is timed to contact the filler at a point just in front of the positions 33 at which the filler, after wrapping, is cut to produce cigarettes, whereby the density of the tobacco filler is increased around the point 33. In a machine producing double-length cigarette sections which are bisected after mouthpieces have been attached to each end to produce two mouthpiece cigarettes, the element 24 may be timed so that the density of the tobacco is increased either adjacent the mouthpieces or at the free ends. The device is also applicable to the machine described in Specification 647,457 in which a composite filler is formed by an intermittently rotating wheel which inserts double-length mouthpiece sections into the tobacco filler. The action of the wheel causes an increase in density of the filler adjacent the mouthpiece sections and the element 24 is timed to restore the tobacco sections to uniform density.
