Abstract

Chloesterol is obtained from the non-saponifiable component of wool grease by first separating the iso-cholesterol by known means and thereafter purifying the cholesterol from wax-like impurities by selective crystallization of the cholesterol from a simple fatty acid, such as acetic acid, at a temperature of 20 to 25 DEG C. or by dissolution of the impurity in the same medium at a temperature of 30 DEG to 35 DEG C. to separate the cholesterol from the said impurities. It may be convenient to separate part of the wax residue first by crystallization, e.g. from acetone. The isocholesterol component, e.g. lanosterol and agnosterol, may be removed by crystallization from methanol. Detailed examples are given.
