Abstract

A monofilament yarn, strand or strip consisting essentially of polyvinylidene chloride or of a copolymer thereof and another polyvinyl compound has a concavo-convex or plano-convex cross-section. The vinyl compound may be a halide, e.g. vinyl chloride, a lower aliphatic ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, e.g. ethyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate, styrene or nuclear substituted chlorine derivatives of styrene, e.g. m-chlorstyrene. The polymerized material in its plastic condition is mixed with suitable plasticisers or stabilisers, and extruded into filaments, which are then drawn and preferably hardened and cooled in a water bath. Pigments or dyes may be incorporated with the resin. The monofilament yarns may be woven into fabrics, the convex surface of the yarns being positioned preferably on the outer side of the fabric.
