Abstract

581,217. Gas turbines. FAIREY AVIATION CO.; Ltd., and, FORSYTH, A. G. June 20, 1944, No. 11723. [Class 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] For cooling. purposes, the main turbinecompressor shaft of a gas turbine is situated in an inner casing surrounded by an annular air duct open at its leading and trailing ends said duct being situated inside the turbine and compressor blade annulus. The compressor k supplies air to the combustion chamber or chambers r the gases from which expand in the turbine o driving the compressor through the shaft m which is enclosed by an inner casing n surrounded by an annular cooling air duct q open at its leading and trailing ends at g and y respectively. The casing f is provided with external cooling fins j and a cowl s for increasing the jet efficiency. The shaft m may drive a propeller through reduction gearing and additional stages may be added to the turbine o and all the power utilised in the propellor the thrust from the jet being negligible.
