544,884. Coating webs; printing. CHAMPLAIN CORPORATION. July 15, 1940, No. 11732. Convention date, Aug, 18, 1939. [Class 140] [Also in Group XVI] A travelling web of sheet material, e.g. of paper, cellulose film, fabric or metal foil, is printed or coated with thermo-plastic material by applying the material liquified by heat to a surface of the web in closely spaced but segregated and uniform quantities and integrating them to a smooth and continuous film. A suitable coating composition comprises zinc resinate and hydrogenated castor oil. A web W which may be pre-heated by a heater 36 is coated with material from a bath 24 by an intaglio cylinder 18 cooperating with an impression cylinder 14. The bath 24 and cylinder 18 are heated by circulating a fluid through, or providing cartridge heaters in passages 28, 30. An adjustable doctor blade 32 serves to remove excess coating from the cylinder 18. The coated web' is heated at 34 by carbon filament infra-red lamps, resistance heaters, carborundum glow bars, gas radiants or heated air blast &c. then initially set by cool air blasts from nozzles 40 and further cooled by a cooling roller 42.
