507,064. Filters ; filtering - media. RUSSELL, J. K., COLLINS, W. B., and BOGGS, W. W. Dec. 6, .1937, No. 33763. Addition to 476,422. [Class 46] [Also in Group III] The refining element of apparatus for purifying liquids comprises a finely divided adsorbent material and a large number of lumps or wads of a fibrous filtering material which supports the adsorbent material, the said materials being . arranged in separate layers and so that flow-imped. ing packing or settling of the adsorbent material is substantially prevented. The adsorbent material may be activated, e.g. as described in Specification 476,421, and the parent Specification, and may consist of chemically or otherwise activated clay of one or more degrees of fineness: there are specified fuller's. earth, synthetic clay, pumice, infusorial earth, diatomaceous earth, kieselguhr, and Bentonite. The fibrous material may be mineral, rock, or steel wool, asbestos, cotton waste, curled hair, or paper. The apparatus may be fitted in the oil circuit of an internal combustion engine, as in Specification 476,421 and the parent Specification. A refiner may consist of a horizontal chamber, containing a layer of fibrous material (which may rest on a foraminous sheet) supporting a layer of adsorbent material or a plurality of pairs of such layers which may be contiguous or separated by felt or wire gauze and may have intervening air spaces, having liquid supply and withdrawal connections on its lower and upper faces respectively. Alternatively, a refiner may consist of the apparatus illustrated in the parent Specification, the refining material being arranged as pairs of concentric layers, which pairs may be separated by partitions of wire gauze or other loraminous material or of felt or by air spaces, or of the apparatus illustrated in Specification 476,421, when the refining material may be arranged in superposed or concentric layers. Further, as shown in the Figure, an outer casing includes an annularly or longitudinally corrugated outer shell 4 which may be reinforced by hollow foraminous ribs 16. Inner shells 7 and 8 retain a filter 9, and between shells 4 and 7 is situated a refining element 10 consisting of layers as described above. Shells 4, 7 and 8 are foraminous except near their ends, and are closed by bevelled discs 5, the bevels of which are covered with felt, provided with foraminous baffles C, e.g. of wire cloth.
