[Class 81 (ii)] A therapeutic appliance comprises a plurality of thin and flexible electrically conductive plates or strips 10, each embedded in a covering body of insulating material 12, the thickness of which is greater on the side adjacent the surface to be treated than on the other side, means being provided for securing the strips in position in a further layer of insulating material 14 arranged to extend between the electrode and the surface to be treated. The electrode 10 may have an exterior coating 11 of tin or pewter and the insulating layer 12 may be of indiarubber latex cured, vulcanized or electrodeposited on the plate. The insulating layer 14 may be of felt and may be recessed to take the electrodes. A further layer of a perspiration absorptive material 16 may be provided. The plates may be shaped to con- ' form to the contours of various areas of the body and may be incorporated in a mask. A layer of flexible reinforcing insulating material may be attached to the outside of the mask and suitable straps 15 connected thereto. Connection to the plates is made by the binding post 17 through a branched conductor or a number of conductors. Preferably, only a few of the plates are activated at a time. Highfrequency current of the order of 6 to 12 metres is used without a second electrode in contact with the body. Suitable dimensions for the appliance are; thickness of copper plate, 0'3 mm. ; thickness of rubber on inside of plate, 4 mm. ; thickness of rubber on outside of plate, 2 mm. ; distance of plate from surface to be treated, 7 mm.
