Abstract

485,161. Fire-extinguishing. SEKINGER, O. Nov. 11, 1936, No. 30759. [Class 47 (ii)] An automatic fire-extinguishing system, with a fire-detecting arrangement serving as the starting member, consisting of a container for gas under pressure and at least one container for the extinguishing medium connected thereto and having pipes provided with apertures and leading to the places exposed to the danger of fire, is characterized by a fire detector in electric circuit with an electric motor which operates the gas valve; the whole being so arranged that on the outbreak of fire, the fire detector closes the circuit which opens the gas container whereby the extinguishing medium is fed to the place of conflagration through the pipes under the pressure of the gas. A vessel 2<1> contains nitrogen under pressure, the vessel being connected to a container 16 of liquid fire-extinguishing medium. The vessel 2<1> has a valve opened by rotating a spur wheel 14 gearing with a pinion on the armature shaft of an electric motor 12<1>. Combustible strings 6 retain spring-pressed members 7 outwardly to maintain the electric circuit containing the motor open. On a fire occurring, the armature is energized and the valve opened, extinguishing liquid being forced by the pressure of the gas to either a pipe 18 or 19. The first is oscillated about a ball joint 20 by an electric motor oscillating an arm 22, and the second is oscillated about its axis by similar means. The shaft of the motor 12<1> is threaded to engage a nut 29 linked to an electric contact 34, which shuts off the motor 12<1> when the valve is fully open and diverts the current to the motor oscillating the arm 22. In a modification, the fireextinguishing delivery pipe 36 is connected to a pipe 38 capable of angular movement and of axial movement and carrying a spraying pipe 41 by a ball joint 40. An electric motor 43 secured to the pipe 38 drives a crank pin 45 engaging a lever having an eye 47 embracing the pipe 41 and a slot engaging a pin 49. A second electric motor 52 drives a pinion 53 gearing with a segment secured to the pipe 38 ; and a third electric motor 63 drives a pinion gearing with a spur-wheel rotating axially with the pipe 38. A number of switches 60 arranged in a circle are each connected to a thermostatic fire detector situated in each compartment of a magazine comprising three tiers surrounding the apparatus. Electric circuits are described ensuring that, in the event of one of the detectors functioning, the motor 63 is first energized to turn the nozzle 41 in the appropriate direction, the motor 52 is then energized to direct the nozzle to the appropriate tier, the motor 121 is then energized to deliver pressure gas, and, finally, the motor 43 is energized to distribute the extinguishing media thus forced through the pipes 38, 41 to the appropriate compartment. In a modification of this arrangement, a number of pipes for conveying fire extinguishing media are arranged radially in the manner of a multi-way valve, the plug of which is rotated by an electric motor in a manner similar to that described in connection with the pipe 38.
