Abstract

A distance measurement arrangement is disclosed comprising two transceivers. The first transceiver emits an encoded request signal to a second transceiver which recognises the signal and responds by emitting a similarly encoded response signal to the first transceiver. The time between emitting the request signal and receiving the response signal is measured by the first transceiver and used for determining distance between the transceivers. The transceivers may be battery powered and may communicate via radio frequency signals.

Description

ELECTRONIC DISTANCE MEASUREMENT SYSTEM
The invention has been designed for use in proximity alarm devices but can be used wherever distances are required to be measured electronically.
Unlike existing technologies (such as sonar and radar) this system is designed on the basis that the measuring and target units co-operate with each other. The target unit generates and emits its own signals for the benefit of the measurement unit instead of just reflecting signals generated by the measurement unit.
The invention is made up of two or more Transceivers. One Transceiver is able to calculate the distance between itself and the other Transceiver(s) .
In another embodiment all the Transceivers are able to calculate the distance between each other.
The Transceivers are battery powered electronic devices which communicate with each other via a publicly available radio frequency. The radio signals emitted are encoded so that the Transceivers recognise each other's signals.
The method by which distance is calculated is the time delay in radio contact between the Transceivers. The process is as follows: 1. Transceiver I emits a single (or periodic) encoded request signal.
2. Transceiver 2 recognises this signal.
3. Transceiver 2 responds by emitting a similarly encoded response signal.
4. Transceiver 1 recognises this signal.
5. Transceiver 1 measures the time between emitting the request signal and receiving the response signal.
6. Transceiver 1 has pre-set data equating time to distance.
7. By comparing the time taken to the pre-set data, Transciever 1 is able to calculate the distance between the Transceivers.
