Abstract

238,956. Ellis, G. B., (Roessler & Hasslacher Chemical Co.). May 28, 1924. Non - metallic substances, obtaining; alkali metals and chlorine, obtaining.-In a process of electrolyzing a fused metal halide salt the salt is heated and fosed to free it from moisture and gaseous impurities in a compartment of the cell separrate and distinct from the compartment in which electrolysis takes place, the disposition of the two compartments being such that no unfused material or gaseous or solid impurities can enter the compartment in which electrolysis is effected. A cell C for the electrolysis of sodium chloride is provided with an annular cathode surrounding a central anode, and is divided into two compartments by the roofs of the submerged chambers G, F arranged for collecting the sodium and chlorine respectively. The salt is fed to the cell through a hole N in the cover and the compartments communicate with one another by means of a narrow annular passage, between the chamber G and the wall of the cell.
