Abstract

A flexible endoscope cover has a flexible sheath, transparent window component and a locking device which allow the device to be placed over flexible medical endoscopes. Once in position, the device covers the distal end of the endoscope and forms a protective barrier preventing the endoscope from becoming contaminated during medical procedures. The transparent distal window end allows the user full vision through the endoscope while the cover remains in position. The locking device allows the cover to be placed in position over the endoscope and also allows the removal of the cover when the procedure is finished.

Description

2336540 Page 1 FLEXIBLE ENDOSCOPE COVER This invention relates to a
sterile, disposable cover for use with flexible endoscopes Flexible endoscopes are used by the medical profession as a diagnostic tool to allow surgeons and physicians to examine specific areas of the body to help determine the root cause of patient problems and subsequently decide on the best type of treatment to perform.
After each examination, flexible endoscopes need to be sterilised to prevent the possible transfer of bacteria or other contaminants.
The current method of sterilisation is the immersion of each scope in a bath of gluteraldehyde for a specific period.
By applying a disposable cover over the length of a flexible endoscope, an effective barrier will be produced to prevent contamination and the need for a sterilisation bath will be eradicated as the endoscope itself will not come into contact with patient tissue.
According to the present invention, there is a cover for flexible endoscopes comprising a soft, flexible sheath, a proximal seal and a clear distal window end.
The material allows the cover to be positioned, by placing the distal window of the cover over the distal end of the endoscope and pulling the cover along the length of the scope. The distal. window allows the user to view the examination site whilst the cover is in position. The proximal seal ensures the cover remains in position, completely surrounds the endoscope and prevents any possible contact with outside contaminants.
Page 2 A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows the unit in position ready for the scope to be inserted into the cover.
Figure 2 shows the unit covering the scope, producing an effective anti contamination barrier.
Once in position the unit can be extended along the line of the scope to produce a tight fit without excessively increasing the overall diameter of scope and scopecover combined.
The distal window allows the diagnostic examination to take place without the user's vision being compromised.
Once the examination is completed, the scopecover is removed and disposed in line with recommended hospital procedures.
