5838. Esplen, A. March 11. Fire - bars a n d grates.-In furnace grates with l o n g fire - bars, vertical and lateral distortions are prevented b y intermediate bearers having suitably - arranged distance-pieces formed or fitted thereon. In the arrangement shown, the distance-pieces consist of arched blocks d, either separate from, or cast on, the bearers, and extending up to the level of the fuel surface. The arched pieces may be perforated at the grate level to allow the passage of air. The fire-bars are of the double - grooved type described in Specification 5754/08.
