Abstract

6317. Fullagar, H. F. March 15. Gas turbines.-In apparatus such as that described in Specification No. 19,920, A.D. 1901, where products of combustion in a practically continuous stream are supplied to a motor, oxidation of the metal surfaces is prevented by injecting inert gases, e.g., a portion of the exhaust into the combustion chamber. In Figs. 1 and 2, the combustion chamber a is supplied with gas and air by the pipes b, c respectively. The combustion products pass through the pipe d to the motor e, in this case a turbine, and exhaust through the pipe f to the regenerator flue h, thus heating the tubes i. Some or all of the products escape by the pipes k, q, o to a turbine pump n driven by the motor e, which delivers them with fresh air admitted by the pipe r, through the pipe m, tubes i, and pipe c to the combustion chamber a. The proportion of exhaust gases and fresh air admitted can be regulated by the valves v, s. Any excess of combustion products is allowed to escape past the valve u. The turbine e is shown driving a dynamo p direct. Other means may be employed for cooling the products of combustion, such as water-cooled surfaces, the evaporation of water spray, or lengthening or cooling the pipe q.
