Abstract

173,252. Salisbury, C. K. July 19, 1920. Gearing with provision for permitting flexure or distortion; clutches, arrangements of. - The crank-shaft of the engine A is raised or lowered to vary the volume of the combustion chamber, and drives the gear box shaft of the vehicle through a clutch 289, 290 by means of a short tubular shaft 281 which encloses a universal joint at each end. The clutch is adjacent to the gear box 293, instead of to the engine flywheel, in order that the engine may be detached as a unit on removing three bolts 283.
