1527498 Prosthetic hip joints M GAIA 21 Nov 1975 [29 Nov 1974] 47925/75 Heading A5R [Also in Division E2] A prosthetic hip joint comprises a femoral part having a femoral extension 4 and a part-spherical head 3 made of a metal or metallic carbide, and a hemispherical socket 1 formed of an elastomeric material, the inner surface 5 of the socket having embedded therein insert members 6 made of wear-resistant material such as ruby, sintered metal carbides or anisotropic crystals, the insert members having their outer surfaces raised above the inner surface 5 to form a discontinuous hemispherical surface containing channels (7) (Fig. 3, not shown) for passage of lubricating fluid. Alternatively the insert members may be embedded in the part-spherical head with the socket being formed from metal.
