Abstract

1509791 Polymer coated substrates FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 7 April 1975 [4 May 1974 21 Aug 1974] 14246/75 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Polymer surfaces are coated with an aqueous composition comprising (a) an addition copolymer of (1) at least one monomer containing a carboxylic acid, salt or anhydride group and (2) an olefin, (meth) acrylate ester, (meth) acrylamide, vinyl ether or ester, styrene, an α, # - unsaturated nitrile and/or an N - vinyl compound, and (b) a melamine - formaldehyde condensate. Preferably the copolymer is obtained by emulsion polymerisation of monomers contaning 0.8 - 15wt.% of the carboxylic monomer (1). There may also be present (c) a cross - linking catalyst, (d) a matting agent, and an alcohol, ketone or ester. In Examples films of polyethylene terephthalate (which may be flamed, subjected to corona discharge, or subbed with polyvinyl alcohol) or bisphenol A polycarbonate or cellulose triacetate are coated with a latex and 10 to 100phr (solids) of a hexamethylolmelamine hexa- or trimethyl ether, 2phr of ammonium, magnesium or propanolamine chloride or 3phr of ammonium sulphate or nitrate, and, in Exs. 17- 21, 40 - 70phr of 1 to 40 micron quartz, CaCO 2 , Al@O 3 or TiO 2 . The latices used are obtained from acrylic and/or itaconic acid (2-10mol%), methyl methacrylate (41-83mol%) and ethyl acrylate (10-50mol%), one or both of the latter being replaced by butyl acrylate or hydroxyethyl methacrylate or a hydroxyethyl methacrylate / methyl acrylate mixture.
