1500129 Slicing machines with blade sharpeners BERKEL & PARNALL Ltd 25 March 1975 [19 Feb 1974] 7390/74 Heading A4C [Also in Division B3] A food slicing machine has a circular cutting blade 10 rotatably mounted on a rotatable blade carrying arm with the axes of rotation being parallel and spaces, the arm carrying a counterweight 18 to which is attached a holder 21 for a detachable blade sharpener having a body 22 mounting grinding wheels 34, 35 and being slidable on to the holder, secured by a thumb screw 23 and adjustable radially with respect to the blade by a screw 50. The grinding wheels are mounted on stepped spindles, e.g. 36 located in sleeves 32, 33 attached to the body and urged towards the blade by tight springs e.g. 37 into their sharpening positions. Pins 40, 42 extending from the spindles through the sleeves are engageably by respectively a lug 37 and a handle 45 by movement of the handle anti-clockwise after release of a latch 48, 49 to thereby withdraw the grinding wheels from the blade. A stronger spring 46 biases the handle to the anti-clockwise position. The deburring grinding wheel 34 may have its axis out of parallelism with the blade axis so that during sharpening wheel-to-blade contact pressure is greater at the point where the blade initially comes into contact with the wheel and is less at the point where the blade leaves the wheel. The slicing machine may have a door giving access to the blade and arm and provided with a shut-off safety device. The blade only may be run for a pre-set time and at a pre-set slow speed for sharpening.
