1498987 Force measuring apparatus W & T AVERY Ltd 24 March 1976 [17 April 1975] 40296/77 Divided out of 1498986 Heading G1W A force measuring apparatus comprises a fixed support 52 and a force receiver 50 coupled to the fixed support by means comprising a set of flexure strips 54, 56 which are rigidly united at both end portions and are more widely separated from one another by a spacermember 64 intermediate their end portions,the end portions being respectively connected by the fixed support and the force receiver. In Fig.3, force receiver 50 is coupled to support 52 by four pairs 54, 56 of flexure strips each spacer 64 being common to two pairs of strips. The strips may be united in face to face contact at their end portions or spacers may be interposed. The strip lengths 68, 70 may be shorter than lengths 66, 72. A dashpot 58 is provided and a leaf spring 76 resisting movement of the force receiver may be provided or omitted. The four pairs of strips may be replaced by two sets of strips of the type shown in Fig.2, each set being formed by a slotted spring plate. The weight may be measured by measuring directly the movement of the force receiver or by measuring the deflections of the strips either capacitatively or by means of strain gauges.
