1488413 Cooling dressings UNION CARBIDE CORP 20 Feb 1975 [13 March 1974] 7129/75 Heading A5R A combination absorbent dressing and flexible cooling device comprises: (a) dressing composed of a hydrophobic top sheet 17 for placement adjacent to the body having a plurality of valve-like openings therein (which as shown (Fig. 3) are rows of straight slits (18)) and having a system of dimples 19 disposed thereon, a liquid impermeable backing sheet 16, and an absorbent material 15 disposed between said top sheet and backing sheet; (b) a cooling device comprising a flexible packaging material 24 encompassing and sealing an insoluble cold retaining hydrophilic gel 25; and (c) an insulating material 26 covering said cooling device and said dressing composite. There may also be provided an outer sheet 11 having two outer segments 12, 13 covered with adhesive for attaching the bandage to a patient and releasable cover strips 27 to protect the dressing prior to its application. The hydrophobic top sheet 17 may be of ethylene ethylacrylate film. The hydrophilic gel may be made from poly (ethylene oxide) or exemplified substituted derivatives thereof by insolubilising a solution of the polymer by irradiation, producing chemical cross-linking of the molecules.
