Abstract

1465097 Soldering ALUMINUM CO OF AMERICA 16 July 1974 [20 Sept 1973] 31478/74 Heading B3R Apparatus for agitating molten metal for soldering comprises a vessel 10 having a one-piece shell 12, curved in cross-section, multiple vibration transducers 24 spaced about the outside of the shell in energy transmitting relationship therewith, a plurality of individually controllable electrical generators 32, 33, 34, one or more oscillators 38, 42, 43, 44 for triggering the generators, groups of transducers being connected to individual generators to establish individually controllable zones of energy and means 29 for heating the vessel. The vessel is formed, in the embodiment, of the curved shell 12 and end walls 14, 16 which may be integral with the shell or welded thereto. Four spaced bars 18 are provided along the outside of the shell and may be integral therewith or welded thereto by full penetration welds 22, magnetostrictive transducers 24 being secured to coupling extensions 20 on the bars 18. The transducers along each bar 18 are connected in groups of four to three generators 32, 33, 34 individually controllable by rheostats 36 and all the generators are triggered by a single variable oscillator 38 or each generator may be triggered by its own oscillator 42, 43, 44. The heating devices 29 are electric resistance heating rods having reflectors facing the shell. The soldering of heat exchanges and the tinning of bodies in the apparatus is referred to. The transducers may vibrate at subsonic, sonic or ultrasonic frequencies.
