1464965 Laminating process FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 13 May 1974 [24 May 1973] 21154/74 Heading B5A A process for bonding materials together comprises either: (a) coating the surfaces of the material with an epoxy resin, interposing a saturated polyester containing less than 70 mole per cent of residues derived from ethylene glycol as the glycol component between the coated surfaces; or (b) coating each face of a sheet of polyester as defined in (a) with an epoxy resin, interposing the coated sheet between the materials, and hot pressing the resultant assembly in the absence of any hardening agent for the epoxy resin. The materials to be bonded may be of metal, e.g. aluminium, steel, copper, lead or brass, glass, ceramic material plastics, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate or polyvinylchloride, rubber, thermosetting resin or wood. The epoxy resin may be aromatic or aliphatic, many suitable epoxy resins being specified, and may be applied as a solution in a ketone, the solvent being evaporated prior to assembly of the components to be bonded. The polyester resin, which may be in pellet form when the epoxy resin is applied to the surfaces to be bonded, may be derived from ethylene glycol, a glycol of the formulµ HO-(-CH 2 -)- m OH or where R is hydrogen or methyl, m is 3 to 12 and n is 2 to 10, e.g. methylene glycol octane diol or diethylene, triethylene, polyethylene or polypropylene glycol and a dicarboxylic acid, e.g. terephthalic, isophthalic, orthophthalic, adipic, carboxyphenylacetic or naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, a hydroxyacid, e.g. p-#-hydroxyethoxybenzoic acid being optionally included on the reaction mixture.
