1458632 Dyeing natural and synthetic fibres CARPETS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 30 May 1974 [12 June 1973] 24030/74 Heading D1B Natural and synthetic fibres are dyed with dyes whose exhaustion onto the fibres is pH dependant and which are fixed on the fibre at a particular pH, the process comprising (a) immersing the fibres in a dyebath having a pH at which no fixation of the dye on the fibres occurs, (b) adjusting the dyebath to a constant temperature without adjustment of the pH, (c) maintaining the dyebath at the constant temperature and adjusting the pH of the dyebath by the gradual addition of controlled amounts of acid or alkali to a pH at which substantially complete exhaustion of the dye occurs, (d) maintaining the dyebath at constant temperature to allow substantially complete reaction between the dye and fibres. Fixation of the dyes may be at an acid pH the dyebath initially being alkaline. Acrylic fibres containing weak acid groups may be dyed with basic dyes the dyebath initially being acidic and the pH is adjusted with alkali to a value no higher than 7 to effect exhaustion. The constant temperature may be the boiling point of the dyebath. Wool and synthetic polyamides may be dyed by setting the pH to 7.5, raising to the boil for 20 to 30 minutes acetic acid being used to adjust the pH.
