Abstract

1442994 Mattresses &c. WATKINS & WATSON Ltd 2 Aug 1973 [21 July 1972] 34197/72 Heading A4M A bed, mattress, chair or like support appliance comprises a plurality of inflatable cells 2 mounted one on each of, and extending along the length of, a plurality of parallel bars 4 through which air is passed via an inlet 9 into the cells 2. The air, which may be heated, passes out of the cell 2 either through its porous wall or through an outlet 10 extending through an associated bar 4. As shown, the inlet 9 and outlet 10 communicate with the interior of a tubular bed frame 3 to which the bars 4 are secured by bolts 5. The cells 2 may be supported on rigid blocks 6 at the ends of the bars 4. Foam material 23 is disposed between the blocks 6. The cell 2 is anchored by ropes 16, 17 engaged in a loop in a web of the cell. Web portions 21, 22 of the cell may be secured to the frame 3 by "Velcro" (Registered Trade Mark) or like quick release fasteners. The cells may be provided internally with webs or strips to limit expansion of the cell. Different size bushes 25 may be fitted to the various cells to vary the air-flow. In other embodiments the bars may be tubular.
