1442990 Ball-joint prosthesis; bone-splicing T A ENGLISH 10 Oct 1973 [19 Oct 1972] 48115/72 Heading A5R A prosthesis for replacement of a ball joint, e.g. the upper part of a femur, comprises a ball head 11 formed integrally with a shank 12 which is adapted to be secured in a bone 18, e.g. the femur, the shank having means associated with it adapted to facilitate the location and retention of a separated bone section 17, such as a part of the greater trochanter, to said bone 18, said means comprising a tapped bore 13 in the shank capable of receiving the thread of a screw 21 passed through a clearance hole 20 in the separated bone section 17, the bore 13 being situated in the face of the shank 12 facing away from the ball head 11, the ball head being inclined with respect to the axis of the shank, and shoulders 14 being formed therebetween. An opening 23 through the shoulder 14 is engageable with a tool for extracting the prosthesis from the bone 18. In an alternative embodiment the said means comprises a protrusion (15), Fig. 2, (not shown) having a tapped bore (16). In another embodiment Fig. 4, (not shown) the shank 12 includes an inert plastics insert (24) having a tapped bore (25) for receiving a screw.
