1419600 Educational appliances WESTING- HOUSE LEARNING CORP 26 March 1973 [7 April 1972] 14331/73 Addition to 1376727 Heading G5G The video - telephone teaching system described in Specification 1,376,727 is modified by the provision of a facility which enables a student to record his voice on the central audio and video information storage medium, this recording being on a first audio track arranged in parallel with both a pre-recorded video track and a pre-recorded second audio track. Thus, in the learning of a language, for example, the student can first operate his controls so that he sees and hears on his video telephone an instructor speaking a foreign language phrase; then replay the sequence, without sound, whilst he records his own voice to the instructor's facial mouthing of the phrase; and finally, select between replaying his own voice or the instructor's voice whilst simultaneously replaying the video sequence. The storage medium may include a plurality of additional audio tracks on which are recorded sounds in different languages, these sounds corresponding to the video sequence on the video track. The modified system may also include an electro-mechanical display device which is located at the student's video telephone terminal and which is actuated by digital/ analog signals received from the computer or by signals derived from a matrix of photosensitvie devices fitted to the viewing screen of the telephone. The device may comprise an audiovisual display, demonstration models which move in response to the computer generated signals, and reward or positive action dispersing means. The system may further include means for assembling and storing video image frames for still-image presentation in a manner extending the transmission link bandwidth capability in the system.
