1408140 Brushes M M LEVENE 8 Dec 1972 [9 Dec 1971] 57304/71 Heading A4K [Also in Division A5] A brush which is used for obtaining cell and tissue samples has at least a conical portion 4 and bristles, e.g. spun cellulose diacetate fibres, which are soluble in a liquid, e.g. acetone, that does not cause morphological damage to the samples. A sample suitable for both cytological and histological examination is obtained by inserting the brush into a hollow viscus, e.g. the uterine cervix, and rotating the brush to obtain a sample and then, removing the brush and placing it in a fixative solution. Some of the cells are shed from the brush into the solution from which a cytological preparation may be made. The rest of the cells are removed from the brush by dissolving the bristles in the liquid that does not cause morphological damage to the cells.
