Abstract

1406615 Absorbent pads F L WILLING- TON 15 March 1973 [15 Dec 1971] 58234/71 Heading A5R An absorbent pad, e.g. a sanitary pad, an incontinence pad, a bed pad, or a diaper, comprises an absorbent filling enclosed in a permeable wrapper, and is charcaterised in that a gelling agent, intended to gel the body fluids, is impregnated in the filling and concentrated in a part of the pad not extending over its full plan area. The pad is intended to be used with the area having the higher concentration off gelling agent arranged to receive the main flow of body fluid. The concentration of the gelling agent in the small higher-concentration area is preferably at least 20% by weight. The remaining area of the pad may be without gelling agent or may have a lower concentration of gelling agent. The gelling agent may be a cellulose ether; the absorbent filling may be flocked wood pulp; the wrapper may be of permeable fabric or of porous paper incorporating a thermoplastic material. The incontence pad 1 shown is of foldable form and is formed by two individual pads joined by a transverse seam 8. The wrapper 3 has sealed end portions 6, 7 providing hand-holds. The filling 2 is impregnated with gelling agent in central areas 5. The wrapper is sealed longitudinally by a longitudinal seam (4), Fig 2 (not shown). The incontence pad 1 is is intended to be used with a pair of pouched incontinence pants. The incontinence pad may have one side formed of impermealble material. A method of making foldable incontence pads 1 is disclosed, wherein the filling material and gelling agent are deposited on a continuous web of wrapper material, and after sealing the wrapper to provide the longitudinal seam and transverse seams, the web is secured at alternate transverse seams.
