1404515 Securing ends of coaxial cables AMP Inc 19 April 1973 [12 May 1972] 18976/73 Heading H2E In a connector for terminating the aluminium outer conductor 16 of a semi-rigid coaxial cable 12, an outer ferrule 28, having means for gripping the conductor 16, is received within a bush 26, and an inner ferrule 60 is received within a bush 62, with interengaging means for drawing together the bushes 26, 62, in such a manner that the outer conductor 16 becomes secured between the ferrules 28 and 60. A ring 30, having inward-facing spring teeth (52), Fig. 2 (not shown), and trapped in a recess 51, may serve as the means for gripping conductor 16 during an initial assembly stage, when the relative location of ferrules 28, 60 is temporarily set by a gauge sleeve 32, Fig. 4. The interengaging means may comprise mating screw threads, and when the bushes 26, 62 are screwed together, having discarded sleeve 32, the inner ferrule 60 is caused to enter and expand conductor 16, resulting also in deformation of the outer ferrule, 44, Fig. 5, into an enlarged bore portion 40 provided in bush 26. This metal-to-metal seal, together with 0-ring seals 80, 72, prevents entry of water into the cable. After assembly, the bore diameters of members 16, 60 and 62 are substantially equal, thereby minimizing r.f. electrical reflections. The inner conductor 18, unbroken through this coupling, may be terminated within a distribution box (10), Fig. 1 (not shown), into which the bush 62 may be mounted, and which may form part of a cable television signal distribution system.
